Rising to the Top: How Young Lawyers Can Build Influence and Credibility in the Legal Profession

Breaking into the legal profession is one thing—thriving in it is another. Success in law isn’t just about knowing the law; it’s about building credibility, sharpening your skills, and establishing yourself as a valuable player in the field. For young lawyers, the path to influence starts early, and the choices you make now will shape the trajectory of your legal career.

My Journey as a Young Lawyer

Hello, I’m Hannah Stepan, a third-year associate at Green Mortgage Lawyers, specialising in Banking and Finance since 2021. Although I didn’t initially gravitate toward this area, I stumbled upon a paralegal role in my university days, and I’ve been dedicated to this field ever since.

Over the past three years, I’ve gained valuable insights into what contributes to success in the legal industry. Here’s what I’ve learned about building influence and credibility as a young lawyer.

Three Core Pillars of Success

Success as a young lawyer hinges on three core factors, which encompass more than just legal knowledge:

  1. Choosing Your Specialist Area of Law: Finding the right practice area that aligns with your interests and strengths is crucial. Whether it’s litigation, transactional law, or another specialisation, ensure it resonates with you personally.
  2. Developing Key Personality Traits: Understanding what makes a successful young lawyer and honing those skills can set you apart in the competitive legal landscape.
  3. Mastering the Art of Networking: Networking is essential for career growth and increasing your influence in the legal community. Building professional relationships can propel your career forward.

Choosing Your Specialist Area of Law

While my initial ambition was to work in humanitarian law or pro bono work, I learned that it’s critical to select a legal practice area that feeds your mind and aligns with your values. A mentor once advised me, “A wise woman picks what nurtures her mind, aligns with her values, and builds a sustainable future.” This perspective shift helped me embrace my current specialisation in Banking and Finance, leading to professional fulfillment.

The Importance of Company Culture

Choosing the right law firm is just as important as selecting your practice area. A supportive company culture can make a significant difference in your satisfaction and success. I’ve encountered many stories of young lawyers feeling disillusioned not because of the work itself, but due to how they were treated in their roles. It’s essential to find a firm that aligns with your work ethic and values.

Essential Personality Traits of a Successful Young Lawyer

Feeling nervous before presentations is common, but advocacy isn’t always the defining trait of a successful lawyer. Here are the top personality traits I believe are essential for young lawyers:

  • Be Inquisitive: Show genuine interest in your work and a willingness to learn.
  • Be Ambitious: Seek out complex matters and responsibilities to expand your expertise.
  • Be Attentive to Detail: Ensure accuracy and compliance in all legal documentation.
  • Be Engaging: Actively participate in your firm’s culture and build strong professional relationships.

Building Relationships: Networking for Young Lawyers

Many young lawyers experience imposter syndrome, making networking feel intimidating. However, it’s an essential skill that helps you build confidence and connections. Engage with professional organisations such as:

  • Women in Finance QLD
  • Queensland Young Lawyers Association
  • Pride in Law

These groups foster supportive environments where young lawyers can learn, share experiences, and grow both personally and professionally.

Measuring Success

As a young lawyer stepping into the legal profession with ambition and resilience, remember that true measures of success vary for everyone. It’s about finding balance and creating a career that fulfills both your professional and personal aspirations.
